Tech Tip
What exactly is HTML?  It stands for HyperText Markup Language.  This is the language that is used for the creation of web pages.

Computers use "languages" to "speak" to each other.  What you see as text and graphics on your computer screen are actually the result of a language or code.  Different software programs use different codes to produce what you are seeing.  That is why you can't read a Word document with WordPerfect, unless you convert it.  Those two programs use different codes.

HTML is the language that your web browser understands.  The HTML codes used to create your webpages are interpreted by the web browser reading the page, resulting in the text and graphics you see on your webpage.

"The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting goals and achieving them. Even the most tedious chore will become endurable as you parade through each day convinced that every task, no matter how menial or boring, brings you closer to achieving your dreams."

Og Mandino, Author

We’ve lived in our house a year now and it’s just over the canyon to the beach-a 15 minute drive. And we’d never been there! (Until last week!) What makes that extraordinary is that we both LOVE to go to the beach.  But my husband really hates traffic. And Los Angeles  is so crowded, we assumed on a weekend it would be bumper to bumper.

I generally can’t (won’t) go during the week.  But the first time we went, we left the house around 10 a.m. and it was smooth sailing. It’s a beautiful drive through Topanga Canyon to the ocean. Usually we get up too late to even attempt it. But we decided that weekend that we were going to the beach no if’s, and’s, or but’s.  It just shows that sometimes a little planning makes all the difference. Is there something you could plan that would make your life richer or happier? Why not do it now!

Also, I’m taking my first extended vacation (2 weeks at least!) since I got on the Internet in 2003! We’re probably just going to hang  out at that very beach because my husband still has the shingles and doesn’t really want to travel right now. (But he’ll be under the umbrella because you shouldn’t be in direct sun with shingles.)

I’m hoping my niece and nephew will come up from Orange County and spend a couple of days with us. I haven’t seen them since Christmas and I miss them! But they are teenagers so you never know at that age what they’ll feel like doing!

Also thanks for all the suggestions and prayers for Christen’s shingles. He’s definitely doing better!

I’ve noticed that things have gotten a lot quieter lately-it’s the last bloom of summer. So if you haven’t taken some time off yet, this is  a great time to do it! AT LEAST take a long weekend over Labor Day!  You can’t keep running on empty! Rest and relaxation are just as important for success as focus and taking action. So give yourself a break before we all rev up again and get back to work!

eBook Writing:  5 Tips To Creating Killer Titles and
Chapter Headings for Your eBooks

  1. Model books and ebooks that have hit the best seller list in your niche. Go to your local bookstore or look in specific niches in ebookstores like Amazon or other online bookstores. You can also go to specialty bookstores if you have a very small but defined niche.
  1. Look for the keywords that people are clicking on online and then include them in your title. The way to do this is to ask yourself what you would look up if you were looking for your ebook and then find those words that have the most clicks.
  1. Write your ebook using conversational language that a 9th grader can understand. People who buy ebooks want answers to their problems quickly and don’t want to have to struggle to understand what it is you are trying to say!
  1. Don’t use technical or dry language that your readers will find boring, because if it’s boring they aren’t going to read it!  And remember if you are targeting consumers, don’t speak to them like you’re talking to your colleagues at a convention!
  1.  Always remember who you are writing this ebook for. Write titles, chapter headings and subchapter headings that will appeal to them. Also be aware that your end user and your customer may be two different groups of people. So while your sales pitch has to appeal to your customer, your  ebook has to appeal to people who are the end users of your ebook.  So always be aware of who is going to actually be reading your ebook as you organize and write your headings.
  1. People want information, but they also want to enjoy what they are reading and be entertained. So loosen up and have fun with your writing. A dull and boring title won’t sell. Remember, people do judge a book by it’s cover! If they don’t like your title they’ll never get to your table of contents. And if they don’t like your chapter headings and subheadings they won’t read the ebook. You have to continue to sell them on it at each turn by keeping it lively. Hold their attention and you’ll have a winner!
Q & A

Q: I'm writing an ebook about how to succeed in college online -- I'm an administrator at an online university. Based on what I see every day, I know I can write a useful book that will make a difference. My question is: How do I avoid making this a one-shot sale? If prospective students read the book, make a better choice, and stay in school, what more do they need from me?

A: These are both good questions to consider before you write your ebook.  It is crucial to define who your target market will be before you start to write. The better you define your target market, the better you will be able to tailor your ebook and its benefits to their needs.  If you are targeting new students, aren't there new students every semester?  That's when your sales promotions should be timed.

As to the second question, this is what provides your next opportunity.  What more DO students need?  That will be your next ebook!  The best way to find out what your target market needs is to ask them.  You can do this by using a survey, running an ask campaign, or asking the question in a newsletter.
