How Fireworks Saved Summers at The Hollywood Bowl
And Why You Need To Know!
( A Study In Good Marketing)
In Los Angeles , there are few traditions but one of them is spending the 4th of July at the Rose Bowl, the Hollywood Bowl or the beach. I've spent 45 years in Los Angeles- with brief departures for college and three years in San Diego and I'd been to the Rose Bowl and the beach but never the Hollywood Bowl. And, with the untimely death of Corey Rudhl and Luther Vandross, I'd made a decision that I was going to do all the things I've wanted to do but have never gotten around to doing and stop putting things off.
So it seemed like a good time to spend the 4th at the Hollywood Bowl. My husband Christen and I took my two nephews with my brother and his girlfriend. The event actually runs for three nights and we went on the 3rd . So, on the 4th we decided to lay low and watch the festivities on television.
As I was clicking around I came across a retrospective on of all things the Hollywood Bowl, and having just been there, I decided to watch it. I admit I click around a lot (my husband says I'm like a guy with the remote control) but, I got the jist of it.
What struck me was that while they were able to fill the seats during “the season” way back when, the summer shows were generally a rehash and people just weren't showing up. But, when they did fireworks for the 4th of July people loved that. And in fact, whenever they had fireworks people would show up no matter what the music was or who was conducting. So they decided to add more shows with fireworks. Makes sense to me.
So what does this have to do with you? The Hollywood Bowl management found out what people wanted and they gave it to them. The biggest mistake people make is authoring e-books without bothering to find out what e-books people want to read, what kind of fr-ee gifts they want to opt-in to your mailing list and what kind of courses and teleseminars they are interested in and then giving it to them.
Before you write one word or spend one dime, be sure to find out what people want and give it to them. Find the angle within your area of expertise that will excite them and compel them to get out their credit card and buy what you have to offer.
The best and simplest way to do this is to ask them what they want. You can use http://snipurl.com/askcampaign to ask your list what they want and compile the information. And if you don't have a list yet, test a special report on eBay , or go to chat rooms and forums and listen to what people are saying they want.
If you need help doing the research, there are two Google products that can help you get started: http://snipurl.com/ppcforbeginners or http://snipurl.com/gettraffic. Do whatever it takes to get the information you need and give people what they want.
I have a client who found that people were not clicking on the keywords for her product but since she'd already written her e-book, she went forward without massaging it to make it exactly what people wanted. Six months later she was kicking herself that she didn't listen to me in the first place. Now she's going back and reworking it.. So, find out what people want and give it to them, it worked for the Hollywood Bowl and it will work for you!
I hope you had a terrific and safe 4th of July, now let's get down to business and make some fireworks of our own for the rest of this year!
