My 17-year-old niece came to visit for the
4th of July weekend.
I don't get to see her that often because I'm busy and she lives
two hours away and can't get up here-she doesn't drive. When I
asked her why she hasn't gotten her drivers license she said gas
was too expensive so there was no point in doing it. I said, why
don't you get it then we'll worry about the gas?!
Over the weekend we went to see Sex in the
City, we watched the fireworks on the beach and rented August
Rush which was a beautiful movie. And, in between I got a chance
to really talk with her. Usually there are other people around
like her two brothers and we don't get into anything real heavy.
But this time it was different. I started
asking her about school and what she was planning to take.
She's always been really interested in drama. In fact Christen
and I once took her to audition at John Powers and everyone was
blown away by her performance.
Christen is an ex-actor and he knows talent when he sees it.
And according to him, she has it!
But her grades weren't high enough and so
they won't let her take drama at school this year. When we
asked her about that she started to cry. She said she wasn't
good enough and she's too short and she didn't want to get type
cast. And she's not sure she wants to do it anyway.
She said the other kids were getting way
ahead of her because they had more money and they were enrolled
in extra-curricula drama projects. And she confessed that the
last time her mother saw her in a play she told my niece she
wasn't good enough-my ex-sister-in-law could tell she was
acting!
Well, as you can imagine I got REALLY mad!
First of all who made my ex-sister-in-law (my brother's
ex-wife) an acting maven? And how dare the school discourage
this beautiful talented actress with their stupid rules that
won't amount to a hill of beans down the road!
And how sad is it that a 17 year-old girl is already creating
all these excuses to not follow her own path!
What I told her was don't let anyone derail
you. If you run into a brick wall find a way around it. You may
have to wait until you graduate to start pursuing your dream but
don't give up!
Find colleges that have good drama
departments and other areas of interest to you so you can test
them all out in college.
Then call them and find out what their
requirements are and be prepared. I also told her to find
someway to support herself while she's pursuing her dream so she
never has to give up for lack of funds. (I suggested videos
since she's already making them.) And NEVER give up!
I think that's pretty good advice no matter
what your dream is!
So if you're hearing yourself in this conversation...knock it
off
and ask yourself, what do I have to do to reach my dream and
stop that
Negative self talk right now!
