“The Creative Art of Authentic Eating”, An Innovative Comprehensive, Whole- body, Heart-based System that Results in Freedom From Food Struggle and Connection to Your True Self by Jane Latimer is an important e-book. And, with a few changes it will definitely be a 5-star e-book! The depth and scope of her knowledge on food addiction and how to stop struggling with food is truly comprehensive. And her style of writing, and the way she focuses on the joy of change instead of the pain of the addiction is wonderful.
The content of the e-book is excellent. It's very professional yet manages to be very personal for the reader. There is also a note of playfulness (which fits the theme of the “creative art” and encourages the reader to approach it in a positive way). The illustrations fit perfectly with this, and help to give the reader permission to take what they need from the program and truly “make it their own”.
And, while they support the e-book, I don't think they are up to the level of the rest of the e-book. And since you see the illustrations before you actually read it, they should convey the same level of professionalism and support the powerful content. So I would hire a professional illustrator and have them take the “essence” of the drawings but make them look more polished.I would also like to see the flow charts fill the page instead of having a lot of white space.
As for the title, the good thing about it is that it does include the idea of struggling with food and finding freedom from it. But it is a long title and people may not understand what she means by “authentic eating”. I would take another look. Author's tend to be married to their titles, but it's an emotional attachment. In fact, it may not be the best title (I'm not sure).
I would make a list of other titles - brainstorm with friends and colleagues and come up with a list of titles that use the keywords that get people to take action and test them. The design and layout are very professional for the most part-with the exception of the cover page for the section “Reasons Why People Fail and What You Can Do About Them.” This page is totally out of character from the rest of the project. It's needs to be “designed” to fit in, right now it's just big black bold type.
As far as the language goes, I think that the author does a good job relating to her audience, however, I wouldn't use the word “prong”. It's not a word that most people use in daily conversations. You want to keep the vocabulary to a 6th to 9th grade level-easily understandable so your customers feel comfortable and trust you.
I also like the way the author incorporated her biography into her
e-book. She understands the e-book is about the reader, not her, but she gives just enough of her story so the reader understands she's been in his/her shoes and can help.
She also includes a good list of resources and makes it easy for the reader to use the e-book (including instructions on how to use the Acrobat Reader.) . I did find it confusing though when she told the reader to listen to the audio as I didn't realize it came with audio.
She also gives a solid introduction section and, Latimer includes a medical caution and disclaimer which is important for this type of an e-book.
I give this e-book a 4 ¾ and I highly encourage Jane to resubmit this e-book after the few changes are made. I would love to joint venture on it. I think it's an important e-book, well-written, comprehensive and it deserves to be in the E-book Nook Bookstore. |
